Invisalign or Braces

Invisalign or BracesTraditional braces and Invisalign are both used to straighten teeth, but more patients are opting for Invisalign for some of its’ major advantages. Often chosen for the discretion it provides, Invisalign also has features related to comfort and oral health. Yet, not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign. Here is a look at how these treatments differ from each other.

In terms of sheer ability, metal braces are superior to Invisalign. Virtually all common bite irregularities can be corrected through metal braces, while Invisalign cannot address severe rotation or vertical repositioning of the teeth. With either treatment, other appliances may be necessary to correct specific issues, including narrow palate and extreme overbite.

Treatment Time

Metal braces often take about two years to correct teeth, while Invisalign is finished after an average of 15 months. However, Invisalign treatment time does depend on the individual and may take as little as nine months or as long as two years.

Metal braces are visually disruptive, with brackets and wires visible around the teeth. Invisalign is virtually invisible, as it uses clear plastic aligner trays that can be taken out.

Metal brackets and wires can abrade the inner cheeks. Invisalign is known for its’ comfort, as it consist of form-fitted aligners that match your teeth.

Oral Health

Metal braces tend to collect food particles and plaque behind the wires that can complicate brushing and flossing. By contrast, Invisalign can simply be removed for brushing and flossing, so it can ensue normally.

Both orthodontic treatments offer a lifetime of better looks, performance and oral health. While metal braces are an option for patients of all ages, Invisalign Full is available only to most adults and some older adolescents over the age of 17.
