Veneers Can Get You a Hollywood Smile
If you have imperfections in your smile, dental veneers can be a great way to cover up the defects and give you a glamorous smile fit for a star.
A veneer is a thin shell that is placed on the front side of teeth to hide imperfections and improve appearance. Veneers can be made of porcelain or composite resin material, and can be made to match any shade. They are most often made of porcelain since porcelain is less stain resistant and reflects light in a similar way to natural teeth.
After the initial consultation and oral exam to determine whether veneers are right for you, they can be placed in two visits. During the first appointment, a small amount of enamel is removed from each tooth that will receive a veneer. This may require a local anesthesia. A mold is then taken of your teeth, which will be sent to the lab to aid them in creating your custom veneers. At the next appointment, your new veneers will be attached to your teeth with a special adhesive.
Veneers are great at hiding minor aesthetic issues, such as chipped, cracked, misshapen or stained teeth, including discolorations that do not respond to traditional whitening treatments. They are also effective for correcting alignment issues such as crooked, uneven or gapped teeth that could otherwise take several years of orthodontic treatment to correct. Though crowns can correct these issues as well, veneers are a much more conservative approach, since they do not require as much enamel to be removed.
Veneers are not right for everyone though. Veneers are not recommended for teeth with severe decay or large fillings. Additionally, if you grind or clench your teeth, you may not be a good candidate for veneers.
