What Makes Vitamin D Important for the Teeth
Vitamin D has been associated with many health benefits. Some of these benefits include strong bones, a better overall mood, and a well-functioning immune system. A recent research review indicates that it may also be quite important with regards to your teeth.
The review analyzed data from nearly 3,000 children. Researchers noticed a 50 percent reduction in decay when an adequate amount of Vitamin D was received. Part of the reason for this is believed to be that Vitamin D plays a big role in allowing your teeth to properly calcify. The stronger your teeth are, the easier it is for them to resist the harmful effects of bacteria. Additionally, the fact that Vitamin D boosts the immune system further indicates why it may help protect the teeth from bacteria. In essence, your body is better able to fight off potential infections that may lead to the development of cavities.
One of the biggest sources of Vitamin D is natural sunlight. As far as food is concerned, fish, mushrooms, and fortified milk are particularly good sources. Experts caution against the use of supplements to bolster your Vitamin D levels, as there has not yet been enough research done on them to fully understand their effects. There is also evidence that the phosphates contained in sugary drinks may suppress Vitamin D levels, so it is best to avoid them. A proper diet and enough sunlight, combined with practicing proper oral hygiene, may just be enough to avoid a trip to the root canal dentist.
